About usMapping Bangladesh is an online based community in Bangladeshconstituted of mappers working to develop digital mapping systemthrough contributions of citizen cartographers on Google MapMaker.HistoryGoogle opened up Google Map Maker, a public cartography project, toa collaborative community effort in certain territories in June,2008. Bangladesh was open for editing on September 28, 2008.Mapping Bangladesh community was co-founded by Google andAltaf-Uz-Zaman on 17 January 2012. Afterwards, it started workingwith a view to uniting all mappers (citizen cartographers) acrossthe country under one community. The community aimed at teachingcitizen cartographers how to map features on Map Maker, provided aground for discussion about local conventions and engaged indiscussions about how to best represent the country digitally tothe world by means of Google Maps.Many of the Internet users in Bangladesh do not have mastery ofEnglish, as such many of the local mappers could not follow the MapMaker Help[2] section in English given by GMM. Being the first everMap Maker based community in Bangladesh, Mapping Bangladesh createda site composed fully in local language (Bengali) with illustratedtutorials, pictorials and videos for mappers to understand betterhow Map Maker works and how to use this online tool.
